Vienna, Austria
In the 16th century, a baby Asian elephant, later known as Sulieman, made a long journey from Ceylon to Portugal to Spain as a gift from King John III of Portugal and his wife, Catherine of Austria, to the Archduke Maximilian II. Sulieman was shipped from Barcelona to Genoa, and then traveled overland via Milan, Cremona and Mantua. He walked the whole way from Lisbon to Vienna through the Alps for five months finally entering Vienna on March 6th, 1552. Filmmaker Ani Antonova tells the tale of this long and arduous journey undertaken by Sulieman, Vienna's first elephant. Over 5,000 individually drawn images render the animal in relentless motion, sketching the strenuous path taken across the Alps by the adolescent Sulieman. 'The Outlander' is the sad migration story of a thick-skinned immigrant passed on from one ruling dynasty to another, as he involuntarily treks across Europe.
