"Up We Soar" is an animated documentary that brings to life an intimate personal tragedy in the background of large-scale persecution. Through animation and live interviews, the film takes us into the lives of regular people who dare to speak the truth in the face of oppression. A young girl in Tianjin, China, Fuyao, leads a happy life with her parents until the Chinese regime starts a massive persecution against Falun Gong, a spiritual meditation practice. Her parents, who are both practitioners, are given long jail sentences and Fuyao is forced to move in with her extended family. There she struggles to cope with the challenges of growing up and missing her parents.
